From roti and paratha to hair oil, ice creams, and televisions, a wide range of consumer goods will soon cost less as the GST Council on Wednesday approved a major restructuring of the tax regime.

The new framework simplifies slabs to just 5% and 18%, effective September 22, coinciding with the start of Navaratri.

Personal-use and aspirational household items such as air conditioners and washing machines will also see rate cuts, while GST on personal health and life insurance has been reduced to nil — a move aimed at spurring consumption and softening the impact of US tariffs on the economy.
