The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority has facilitated the first export shipment of GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai, marking a significant step in expanding international market access for agricultural products from India's North Eastern Region.
The one-metric-tonne consignment, exported on June 7, 2026, comprised the renowned Tezpur Litchi, a Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged fruit known for its sweetness, bright-red colour, distinctive aroma and superior quality. Popular varieties cultivated in the region include Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi.
The export is expected to enhance the global visibility of Assam's horticultural produce while strengthening the market recognition of Tezpur Litchi. APEDA said the development highlights the growing acceptance of India's GI-tagged agricultural products in international markets and underscores the export potential of the North Eastern Region.
The consignment was flagged off in the presence of local government officials, APEDA representatives, farmers and exporters. Farmers participating in the export supply chain reportedly received nearly 10% higher prices than prevailing domestic market rates, creating additional income opportunities and encouraging greater participation in export-oriented agriculture.
APEDA noted that it has been actively promoting agricultural exports from the North East through infrastructure support, quality certification, capacity-building initiatives and market linkage programmes. The successful shipment is expected to pave the way for larger export volumes of Tezpur Litchi and further strengthen the international presence of Assam's GI-tagged products.
