The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), the flagship maternity benefit scheme of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, continues to strengthen maternal health and early childhood care by providing financial assistance to pregnant women and lactating mothers across the country.
Launched in 2017 and integrated under Mission Shakti from April 2022, the scheme aims to promote better nutrition, maternal healthcare and positive health-seeking behaviour among beneficiaries.
Under PMMVY, eligible women receive financial assistance of Rs 5,000 in two instalments for their first living child. For a second child, beneficiaries receive Rs 6,000 if the child is a girl, supporting the government's efforts to promote gender equity and improve outcomes for the girl child.
The scheme links benefits to key maternal and child health milestones, including early pregnancy registration, antenatal care and immunisation. Funds are transferred directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism, ensuring timely and transparent delivery of assistance.
As of April 30, 2026, PMMVY has benefited over 4.27 crore women across the country, with total disbursements exceeding Rs 20,150 crore. The scheme also provides fresh eligibility in cases of miscarriage or stillbirth, enhancing its inclusiveness and support for women during vulnerable periods.
According to the Ministry, PMMVY has played a significant role in improving maternal well-being, encouraging institutional deliveries and reducing financial barriers to healthcare by helping women access nutritious food, regular medical check-ups and essential maternal care services. The government said it remains committed to strengthening implementation and expanding the scheme's reach to ensure greater maternal and child health outcomes nationwide.
